Veterinary schools in the United States are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). There are only 28 accredited veterinary programs in the United States, producing approximately 2,500 graduates each year, making admissions extremely competitive. While a bachelor’s degree is not required to be accepted into a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, applicants are generally required to complete a number of pre-requisite credits at a 4 year undergrad program. 1. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine was selected in 2011 as the top veterinary school in the country, a position it has held consistently since the year 2000. Cornell University itself was ranked 15th in the entire nation.

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell has a long history dating back to 1894. Its not only the best veterinary school in the country, its also one of only three such programs in the Northeast. The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine is recognized as a world leader in veterinary education, animal medicine, and biomedical research.

The College offers a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program, as well as Masters and PhD degrees. The college also offers residency and internship program to its students looking to advance their knowledge in clinical specialties.

Admissions into the program is based on admissions criteria that is 50% objective and 50% subjective. The College’s admissions criteria is determined based on:

  • 25% Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • 25% GRE (verbal and quantitative) or MCAT
  • 20% Prior Animal, veterinary, or biomedical experience, as supported by letters of recommendation
  • 10% Non-cognitive skills
  • 10% Any other achievements or letters of recommendation
  • 5% Quality of the academic program
  • 5% Personal statement

Tuition and fees for the 2012-2013 school year was $29,400 for NY State residents, and $44,250 for out-of-state residents.

2. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine

The University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is one of the best veterinary schools in the United States. The 4 year DVM program offers students a firm foundation of knowledge and practical skills in veterinary medicine, and also allows students to pursue a more in-depth specialty. The program is home to over 500 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students as well as 180 graduate students, and 90 graduates in the veterinary medicine residency program.

In 2012, the school received a total of 1142 applications, with 138 students being admitted into the program. The Average GPA of accepted applicants was 3.63, and their average GRE scores were 80% (Verbal), 76% (Quantitative), and 67% (Analytical Writing). The vast majority held Bachelor degrees, though a few students held graduate degrees, and a few others were admitted without an undergraduate degree.

Tuition and fees for the 2012-2013 school year was $33,091 per year for residents of California, and $45,336 for non-residents.

3. Colorado State University – College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences

The CSU College of Veterinary Medicine was ranked 3rd best in the United States in 2011. The college offers a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree program, as well as Masters and PhD degrees.

The CSU DVM program encourages a hands-on, practical approach starting from day one. The first two year of the program focus on a broad, comprehensive education in biomedical and veterinary sciences, while also providing students with ample clinical experience. In years 3 and 4, students have the opportunity to work regularly with experienced, world-class clinicians at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The program emphasizes that students are not passive observers, but are full active team members during their hospital rotations.

The deadline for application to the CSU veterinary program is October 2, for admission to next year’s fall semester. Applicants must complete the VMCAS application as well as the CSU supplemental application and GRE scores. Accepted applicants will also be required to submit an official transcript. The approximate tuition and fees for the CSU DVM program is approximately $18,858 per year for Colorado state residents, and approximately $53,000 per year for out-of-state students.
